Marina da Gama - hidden gem @ the gates of cape town

Site is stiLl under construction

False Bay – named “false” since it has been mistaken a few times by sailors for table bay

Registration – Europeans will find it strange : many Estates or Wineries require registration of car and/or driver before lifting their bars .Prevents unwanted entries and will not hurt you

Missing Power sockets in bathrooms – just not allowed in SA by law, so you will have to blow-dry your hair in a different room

Kids – an incomplete list : take a ride in our pedal boat, visit the Penguins in Simons Town, Ostrich Farm on the way to the Cape, Birds and Butterflys in Hout Bay, public pool and miniature golf in Muizenberg, Crocodiles @ Le Bonheur, Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront, steam train ride from CapeTown Harbour to Elgin Railway Market, Family Market @ Blaauwklippen, Aquila Game Farm with the Big Five (little more than 2h drive)

Safety – in over 20 years we never came across a really threatening situation. Presumably more than 95% of the crimes are committed among the township people. Sometimes reason may even be different tribes or fears, that refugees leaving i.e. Malawi and Simbabwe are taking away their jobs.

Nevertheless – make sure always to have your car locked when driving around to prevent you from unpleasant encounters during stops at a “robot” (South African for “traffic light”). And of course do not have any valuables plainly visible in the car, leave them in the trunk.

Guards @ Public Parking – You will stumble over selfmade parking guards almost everywhere. Often you do not have a clue if they are really doing a/their job, yet it is advisable to leave a small fee, 5 R. should be ok.

We once had an experience with a “guard” who was not visible upon our arrival so we refused to pay him when we left. A peculiar scratching noise that we noticed when we left turned into a real scratch along the left side of the car, and instead of a 5 R. fee we had to pay 2300 R. – to the car rental company.

Tip a tip of around 10% of the bill is adequate

Sailing – you will find Imperial Yacht Club on the other side of Sandvlei. They offer sailing courses and boat rental https://imperialyachtclub.co.za/

Kite/Windsurfing – Muizenberg is one of the hotspots for both. Check with locals or through the internet what suits you best
